Teams in grades 4-6 are to be equal strength teams. Grades 7-8 have both Competitive and Developmental teams. Any 7th or 8th grader can choose not to try out and just be placed on the Developmental team.

Tournaments are for teams in grades 5-8 only.

Minimum Playing Time (per player)

Rules for 4th, 5th, 6th and Developmental teams are each player must play one uninterrupted game of the first two. For Competitive teams,  is player must be in for three position rotations in one of the first two games.

Matches

Matches are held on both Saturdays and/or Sundays and we have no control over schedules.

Off-season Events

St Francis DeSales Boy's Volleyball camp: https://www.sfdstallions.org/summercamps

St Charles Co-ed Volleyball camp: https://www.stcharlesprep.org/admissions/summer-programs

Practices

4th grade usually practices once a week and on Saturday morning until the season starts. 5th and 6th usually twice a week. 7th and 8th usually three times a week.

Equipment

Volleyball jerseys will be provided by St. Paul. The players are required to supply their own shorts which should be all-black with no pockets. No jewelry. Knee pads are required.

Games

Complete diocesan games schedules for all teams can be found on the Columbus Diocesan Recreation website.

Concessions

All player parent(s) need to volunteer at least one weekend date during the season to run the St. Paul concession stand. Depending on the number of games hosted at St. Paul, teams may be required to volunteer more than once.

Coaching

Volleyball is a tremendously fun and rewarding sport. Even if you haven't played before, the kids need your guidance! Consider volunteering to coach your son or daughter's team. We will guide you to get started.

Most information referenced may be found on the Diocese Forms Coaches web site linked at the bottom.

Pre-Season

  • The coordinator will manage tryouts (if needed) and forming teams
  • Coordinator is also responsible for relaying all Diocese communications to coaches
  • Attend the Diocese coaches session
  • Complete all required coaches training
  • Learn about the game, rules, and how to effectively coach players
  • Encourage families to register their sons to play

After Teams Formed

  • Meet with your parents and team ASAP. Communicate expectations:
    • Practice days/times
    • Concessions at St Paul
    • 2 adults present with PGC at all times
    • Playing time
    • Communication mechanisms
    • Match play: uniform, knee pads, no jewelry, water bottle, black (preferably no-pockets, no-logo) shorts
  • Prepare practice and match plans
  • Work with the coordinator to secure gym days and times. You will want to practice 3 times/week pre-season and 2-3 times/week during season. We traditionally allocate earlier practice slots to the younger teams.
  • Create a system to keep parents informed of all events. We recommend TeamSnap or at least a Google Calendar. Be able to quickly and easily reach your parents as things change day-of match or practice.
  • Coordinator will arrange with coaches to distribute uniforms and communicate schedule
  • Match schedule typically not made available by the Diocese until mid-September

During Season

  • All practices must have at least 2 adults present with Protecting God's Children (PGC) training. Encourage parents to stay/attend practice--even passively just sitting in the gym.
  • Prepare and submit line-ups for each match
  • Prepare referee payment form, pay referee each match, keep receipts, report any unplanned expense
  • You will receive a check from St Paul before matches start to pay referees. Cash this check and use it to pay referees each match in cash
  • As the home team, recite/lead prayer before the match
  • If you experience any incident: red card, player ejection, parent concern, COVID issue, etc. please inform the Boys volleyball commissioner immediately
  • Report scores in the Diocese Google Form after each match
  • Know and follow the Diocese and age/competitive group specific rules. These are posted on the Diocese web site annually. Playing time guidelines must be observed.

Post-Season

  • Arrange to collect uniforms the first week after the final match
  • Provide all uniforms back to coordinator
  • Prepare for next year!
